1485 Earthquakes Recorded in LA Area in 1988
1485 earthquakes have been recorded in the Los Angeles area of California in 1988, ranging in magnitude up to 5.0. This list does not include every earthquake ever recorded in the area. The Pasadena earthquake (M L 4.9) occurred on December 3, 1988, at a depth of 16 km. Two earthquakes (M L 4.6 and M L 5.2) occurred at almost the same location in Upland, Southern California, on December 19, 1988. The Whittier Narrows earthquake sequence (M L 5.9) caused over $358 million in damage.
The probability of a major earthquake in the Los Angeles region is approximately 30% over the next 30 years. Approximately 30 earthquakes occur every day in the region.
