French Legislative Election Results: A Hung Parliament

Map and Chart of Second-Round Winners

Interactive Map of Final Results

The results of the French legislative elections are in, and they have painted a complex picture. The left-wing coalition, NUPES, has made significant gains, but no single party has won a majority in the Assemblée Nationale. This has resulted in a hung parliament, which could make it difficult to form a stable government. A map and chart of the second-round winners can be found here.

Support for Left-Wing Parties Surges Unexpectedly

One of the biggest surprises of the election was the surge in support for left-wing parties. NUPES, which includes the Socialist Party, the Greens, and the Communist Party, won more votes than any other coalition. This is a significant shift from the 2017 legislative elections, when the centrist party La République en Marche (LREM) won a large majority.

Anti-Le Pen Movement Mobilizes

Another factor that contributed to the hung parliament was the mobilization of an anti-Le Pen movement. After the first round of the election, in which far-right candidate Marine Le Pen came in second place, a coalition of left-wing and centrist parties came together to oppose her. This movement was successful in preventing Le Pen from winning the presidency, but it also contributed to the fragmentation of the vote in the legislative elections.
